Our third AGM elected a new Management Committee, including John Worcester as President, Peter Adams as Treasurer and Gloria Bothe as Membership Officer. Peter Davis gave a talk about Menslink, explaining the free counselling, volunteer mentoring and education programs that Menslink provides to young guys finding life difficult.

There was a good turnout for our first meeting of 2022. Colin Campbell gave us a useful presentation about Hearing Impairment. In addition to providing all sorts of helpful advice about how to respond to a hearing impairment, Colin taught us the Auslan sign for “bull****”.

Dr Sue Packer AM gave a presentation, drawing on her own experiences, on the influence of very early life experiences on the development of the brain. and about the reductions in brain function that can occur in later life. She also presented the trophies she had received as Senior Australian of the Year in 2019

Barry Virtue gave a humorous but very insightful presentation about climate change and the way it was presented by various sides in the debate. His slides were clever, amusing and thought provoking. He kept his audience thoroughly engaged throughout his talk

Robyn Horsfield introduced her new book A Bookshop in Wartime that was about Canberra life in WW2 and the bookshop that was opened by Verity Hewitt. Robyn explained that Penguin paperback books were very popular at that time because they easy to carry around.

Marilyn Jessop gave a fascinating presentation about her aunt, Violet Jessop, and her memoir, “Titanic Survivor”. Marilyn brought along various items that had belonged to her aunt and were related to her service on the Titanic.

Our first meeting of the new year was marred by problems with the visual display system at Harmonie German Club. Malcolm was unable to give his talk about his trip to the Arctic which was to feature a range of photos.
